Drigo is an artist and muralist based in Dallas, Texas. He is a self-taught Chicano artist whose influences stem from skateboard culture, street art, and graphic design. His work focuses on meshing ancient culture with current day iconography, alongside his primary goal of pushing people to feel more connected. “The core philosophy behind my work is centered around growth. Everything I paint and much of the imagery is meant to be symbolic of growth. Like plants, we grow in the right environments. Public artwork can transform a space from bland to enriched and lively. I hope that my murals enrich spaces and breathe life to the people who come across them.”
Behind the mural

The core philosophy behind my work is centered around growth. Everything I paint and much of the imagery is meant to be symbolic of growth. Like plants we grow in the right environments.

I usually begin drawing on my iPad over a photo of the wall I'm planning to paint. Just making marks playing with composition. I like to visit the space and try to imagine what would feel right in the space. I can’t always do this, so If not a good photo works great to get a feel for the wall. I try to take into consideration surrounding colors as well. But ultimately, I just sketch until something that feels good starts to come out. If I'm into it, I keep going with it. Lastly, I choose my color pallet. I use color to try and influence the vibe of the work. Starting with what base color I want, and I build off of that.

What specific materials and techniques did you utilize for this piece, and were there any unique challenges or triumphs in bringing it to life on this scale? I use my iPad to design the mural first. Then I link it to my projector and get the image up. Posca paint markers to get the sketch up. Then exterior house paint with a satin sheen to paint the mural. Typically, I throw my base color down with my sprayer and the rest is by brush.

I would want them to know that this work tells the story of a Traveler's journey through his own mind. And that I painted this while it was raining off and on - ha!
