DAAS is a contemporary artist based in Austin, Texas. Blending abstract and representational forms, his bold, color-rich designs reflect a belief in art’s power to uplift and connect communities. DAAS continues to explore themes of positivity, interconnection, and transformation through large-scale public art. “Viriditas is an old term for the life force behind growth. I built this piece like a cross-section, layering forms that hint at earth, roots, and bloom. The colors move from dense and grounded to brighter and lighter, much like the energy of flora pushing upward, all tied together by gold rings. At its essence, it’s about growth and renewal.
Behind the mural
-
I'm drawn to the natural world, its complexity and character, and I try to capture that through bold, detailed work that sits somewhere between representation and abstraction. This mural was meant to be a kind of meditation; a moment to pause, reflect, and leave feeling at peace and energized. I hope people walk through The Art Docks feeling inspired by the variety of styles on display, taking time with each piece individually, but also stepping back to appreciate the whole experience.
-
Public art meets you where you are - no ticket, no background required. I believe murals genuinely change how a community feels about its own spaces. I just hope someone walking past stops for a second, feels something, and walks away a little more connected to the city around them.
-
I always start with the space, how does the wall sit within the architecture around it? For this one, a circular composition felt right. Balanced, intentional. I built everything outward from there and kept refining until it felt right.
-
Acrylic paint, brushes, and rollers. Rollers for covering ground, brushes for the detail work. Painting at this scale is always a physical challenge, but stepping back and seeing the whole thing come together makes it worth it.
-
I'd love for someone to look at this ten years from now and see an artist who was always pushing and exploring. Abstracted geometry is something I keep coming back to, and this piece feels like a real step forward in that journey.
